Leica M3 with digital back - exploded view

Film-to-digital camera conversion

It’s pretty straightforward to convert film photographs to digital – simply develop the film and scan the negatives. But what if you wanted the aesthetic afforded by a film camera, without the development costs and hassle?

Oliver Baker has spent quite some time disassembling a Leica M3 camera and fitting the guts of two different Sony digital cameras inside, in a completely reversible manner. He includes instructions for the process, as well as offering kits for converting a similar camera to either a full frame (using a Sony A7 base) or APS-C (the NEX-5) size sensor.

It’s certainly a lot more work than a drop-in film cartridge, but this project actually exists, and it’s very accomplished work.
